Start here

  1. Create or import. Open Your library and choose New work or Import a manuscript.
  2. Write. Your words save on this device. AI starts Off; you can turn it On in Settings when you want help.
  3. Review and keep a copy. Open Review for checks, then Export to download your writing. Cloud sync is a separate, manual choice.

Your writing room

Create a work in Your library. Choose novel, short story, poetry or serial fiction. A title is optional; AI starts Off. Open Optional help getting started if you want Guided Start or AI assistance. You can change these choices later in Settings.

Resume writing returns to your last piece and section on this device. A bookmarked link remembers your place; on another device, open the cloud copy first.

A page for your writing

AI assistance is Off by default. Turn it On in Settings to make optional AI tools available for this work. Choose a task: explore ideas, get feedback, revise a selection, draft a passage or scan for inconsistencies. Turning it On sends nothing by itself. Consent and credit approval still come before a request, and suggestions are never applied automatically. Off blocks new requests; a request already started may finish.

Use Piece details to name, reorder and organise chapters, scenes, stories, poems or episodes. Set point of view, story time, tense and narrator perspective when useful. Poetry keeps verse line breaks and indentation. Settings adjusts the page’s font, width, size, spacing, spelling convention and an optional work word goal.

Your story’s memory

Use Develop to keep track of your characters, world and important story details. Confirm a record when you want a check to treat it as established. Attach a passage to show where it comes from.

A belief does not establish world truth. A knowledge record can say when and how a character learnt, forgot or rejected something. Reader disclosures record what the reader is told and where; this follows manuscript reading order, separately from fictional chronology. Reordered or edited evidence may need reviewing again.

Story collections in your library can share a world or keep each piece independent. In an independent collection, sourced story records stay with their own piece. Unsourced records are author-declared collection-wide guidance.

Choose the check you need

In Review, the monthly free continuity check reads only an excerpt you approve, up to 2,000 words and 12,000 UTF-8 bytes. Turn AI assistance On, inspect the excerpt and explicitly consent before running it. It uses a smaller model, spends no purchased credits and allows one completed check per calendar month (UTC), with retry and service capacity limits. Its paired quotes are possible conflicts, not a guarantee that all mistakes were found. This is separate from the larger check with a credit budget.

Find in manuscript searches the current piece or the whole work. Replace saves a checkpoint first. Private Notes are excluded. Versions can restore a checkpoint as a separate copy.

Select a passage before asking for a revision. Draftmere shows a proposal beside your writing. Edit it, keep just a highlighted part, apply it or dismiss it. An approved credit limit appears before an AI request; actual usage is shown afterwards.

Discover story details proposes records for confirmation. Whole-work discovery and review run in explicit batches you can pause and resume. Coverage tells you which pieces were checked. They can miss problems: a completed pass means its planned passages were processed, not that a novel is proven consistent. Voice descriptions and continuity findings are proposals for your judgement.

Check story consistency in Review looks for possible continuity conflicts without requiring story records first. Choose one piece or all pieces, and whether they tell one connected story or are independent. The scan reads provisional details, compares matching observations and rechecks suspected conflicts against both original passages. Choose one total credit limit, then it continues while this view is open. Reading, closer reads of dense passages and comparisons all count toward that limit, even when they find no conflicts. Pause whenever you like; a section already running may finish. Resume preserves completed progress and measured charges. Turn AI assistance On in Settings to enable it.

Findings show evidence strength, not a probability that every mistake was caught. Names, aliases, metaphors, flashbacks and changes over time can lead to missed issues or false alarms. Open Coverage and how this works for remaining gaps. A finished check does not certify an error-free manuscript. Scan progress is separate from device-library backups. Editing selected writing makes earlier findings out of date. Your manuscript and confirmed records stay unchanged until you edit them yourself.

Keep your work safe

Autosave uses this browser’s account-specific device library. Cloud sync is manual and requires a paid period or a beta cloud pass. A cloud copy is separate from your local copy. If a copy changes elsewhere, open it separately rather than overwriting it.

Import TXT, Markdown, DOCX or a Draftmere project backup. Preview it before confirming. Supported formatting is preserved; complex imported layout can change. An unchanged source copy stays on this device. Export TXT, Markdown, DOCX or print to PDF. A project backup includes its checkpoints.

Your account in Settings can download the whole device library and cloud data separately. Use Restore device library to preview and restore a device backup ZIP as separate copies, including checkpoints, proposals, recovery drafts and original imports. Cloud exports contain individual project files in works/. Keep backups before clearing browser data. After signing in and loading the writing room online, you can reopen it offline in the same browser profile, including after closing the tab. Stay signed in and allow site storage; signing out clears offline access. Sign-in, sync and AI require a connection. Browser installation support varies.

The public Collection

The Draftmere Collection is the public reading room, separate from your private writing library. Read published pieces or submit your own through My submissions. A confirmed Free account is enough to submit; an editor reviews each piece before publication. You retain your copyright. The Draftmere logo on public pages returns to the website homepage; inside the app, use Website home in Your account to return there.

Serial releases and feedback

A release snapshot freezes an episode for your own records. It does not publish it to the web. Recaps use only the released editions you select. Use Your account to send beta feedback or request account deletion. Deletion is manually fulfilled during beta.
